BIOLOGY - Cells

~Cells~

Parts/ Organelles
Cell Membrane (see below)

Nucleus
o control cell activities
o contain DNA/RNA
o important for cell division

Ribosome
o involve in protein synthesis
o can be found on ER (Rough ER) or free in cytoplasm

Mitochondria
o "power" house
o place where cell respiration occurs
o provide energy

Golgi Apparatus
o involve in secretion
o consists of flattened, membrane bound sacs called cisternae, together with glogi vesicles
o eg. Inactive enzyme secretion by exocytosis; secretion of carbohydrates for plant cell wall formation; formation of lysosomes

Chloroplast
o found only in green plants
o impt for photosynthesis (site of photosynthesis)

Centrioles
o involve in cell division
o absent in plant cells

Endoplasmic reticulum
o Rough ER (with ribosomes) vs Smooth ER (w/o ribosomes)
o involved in protein synthesis and detoxification respectively
o esp abundant in liver cells
o consists of flattened, membrane bound sacs called cisternae

Vacuole
o stores food and water
o also known to contain the cell sap in plants
o large central vacuole in plants; small & numerous in animal
